main printed feature: book making

This tag features items that depict or discuss aspects of making books in this period.

Soldini, Anima brutorum, 1776 (pl. facing a8r; Getty)

Because plates are printed in a separate process from letterpress text, and because the images in Soldini's work are not closely related to the text, different copies of the book have the plates inserted and bound in different locations. In this copy from the Smithsonian, this is the illustration facing the first chapter, but compare this to the Getty's copy of the book.

The Moderate, 1648 (recto)

This issue of an English newsbook has remained uncut and so shows us its quarto imposition as the pages would have been laid out when printed.

The Moderate, 1648 (verso)

In this unopened sheet, you can see not only the quarto imposition but, if you look closely, one of the pinholes that would have been used to place and hold the blank sheet of paper on the press.

woodblock, Agrostemma githago (recto)

This woodblock was used to print illustrations of the corn-cockle in a long list of herbals, starting with its appearance in Rembert Dodoens's 1568 Florum and continuing through the 17th century. The Museum Plantin-Moretus's catalog record for the block lists books in which it appears, a few of which appear on this site and can be found by searching for

woodblock, Agrostemma githago (verso)

At some point in its history as part of the Plantin Moretus press, a paper label was affixed to the back of this woodblock in order to identify it.
