Dove, A new almanack, 1631 (A2v-A3r)

This almanac shows a typical combination of information: dates of the month, the dominical number, saints days and other festivals, the positions of various astrological features, and space for the user to write their own notes. But this almanac is atypical in that it survived---huge numbers of almanacs were printed, particularly in the 17th century, but most were discarded at the end of the year and lost to posterity.

Gadbury, Ephemeris, 1688 (A4v-A5r)

Although many printed almanacs left space for users to add in their own notes, Gadbury here adds in a block of red text labeled "observations" a brief account of recent historical events.

Moxon, Mechanick exercises, 1683 (pl. 1)

This illustration shows the standard layout of a pair of 17th-century type cases. Individual sorts (or categories of type) would go in the appropriately labeled boxes; although it's hard to tell from this picture, there are actually two cases shown, an upper case and a lower case.

Securis, A newe almanacke, 1571 (A4v-A5r)

This almanac prints the months on individual pages rather than a two-page opening, as become more common in later decades, but a lot of information about astrological bodies and calendar dates is still fit in across the columns.

Slovacius, Allmanach, 1580

This almanac was printed as a single sheet; the damaged sections running across the sheet suggest that it was stored folded for a long period of time, probably helping ensure its survival.
